MongoDB Co-Founder Discusses Big Data

What do you do when you start coding at age four, and are writing programs for your mother's medical practice before you're even out of elementary school? According to a new article from InformationWeek, if you're Eliot Horowitz, you go on to get a B.S. in Computer Science from Brown University, you go on to grab the top spot on BusinessWeek's Top 25 Entrepreneurs under Age 25, and two years later you become the co-founder for what is considered the most popular NoSQL database, MongoDB.

Horowitz says that MongoDB is the accomplishment he is most proud of at this point in his life, likening the development of the 6-year-old database company to a marathon, not a sprint. He states that some of the biggest problems facing the world of big data are what the term actually means, and how to store the data. He reportedly spends much of his time lately on the road, talking to MongoDB users and working to help them solve their big data dilemmas.

According to Horowitz, some of the ways MongoDB is expected to grow in the future is in Mongo-specific tooling and partnerships with other companies who can offer other types of applications including BI tools and ETL tools generally used with relational databases. Currently, the company is reworking the query execution component of its database, with plans to address other components such as optimization and the storage subsystem in the near future.
